o0splitpaw0o’s Rise & Fail – Installing Ubuntu on a Powerbook G4 PPC (Part1)
Bug Reported: bugs.launchpad.net (Sunsetted. Have to redo.) ======================== work around: 1.installed the mini.iso for Ubuntu 8.04 2. when prompted to install packages, I skipped it and installed the minimal install. 3. got to a prompt, logged in and installed the ubuntu desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop 4. edited the /etc/yaboot.conf and removed the following line: append=”quite splash” 5. started desktop session startx proceeded with distribution upgrades Problem seems to be with the slash screen, giving a scene to the end user “it’s not working” ===============================
I’ve done this install on everything from a 1999 iMac Bondi Blue to a G5 dual core tower. My installs were largely do different than any X86 system, the most I’ve had to do is add snd-powermac to the modules file and/or modprobe to find the IDE CD-ROM if doing an alt. install CD. If this was done in 2009 it reflects the pains of 2005-era installations; I’ve not had this many problems getting a G4 class Mac to run Ubuntu (or Suse or Red Hat).
im planing on putting opensuse and windows 7 in a partition on my laptop. iv’e got a 9800m gts and i don’t know if compiz fusion will support it. u are the smart guy and was wondering if they did.
i dont use a mac myself, but im very much impressed by ur guts
Keeping is waay nerdy! LOL!
good stuff man,. i know many folks will love to see this stuff for sure. keep up the good work man.
Nothing wrong with filing bug reports…..without em we would be SOL….
